It is reasonable to take the position that Catholics should not support the current state of Israel. There is little, if any, reasonable grounds to hold the opposite position. And less should anyone feel obliged to claim that they MUST support the modern state of Israel on the speculative idea that supposedly "the Fathers... from their heavenly thrones" would "beseech" us not to follow the "anti-semitic or anti-Jewish canards" or "sins and errors" of our ancestors. Such ancestors included such dignified and saintly persons such as our beloved Pope Saint Pius X of happy memory, Saint Stephen the martyr, Saint Paul, Servant of God Queen Isabella the Catholic and others. Those of us who oppose Zionism are in good company when we stand with such saints. Furthermore, as far as "anti-Jewish" is concerned, we, as Catholics, must be anti-Jewish. Not anti-Jewish in the sense of being maliciously against the Jewish people but against the Jewish religion. The Jewish religion, aside from other errors, is fundamentally opposed to the divinity of Our Lord Jesus Christ and His Kingship over them and over all of creation. That being said the legitimacy of the modern state of Israel-a state that is ruled by Jews and exercising power over the Holy Land and Holy city of Jerusalem for the purpose of providing Jews superior rights and privileges in such a state over non-Jewish persons-is in general unacceptable as a matter of principle from the point of view of reason as enlightened by the Catholic faith. As Pope Pius X rightly indicated the Holy land has been sanctified by the life of Our Lord and therefore the modern state of Israel currently illegally occupies that land. Regarding the claim that the modern state of Israel "protects" the liberty of the Church we dispute that. Within Israel the Church has come under increasing harassment from Jews in various different ways such as vandalism and assaults (i.e. spitting at nuns and other religious, attacks on church properties, a recent attack on a primarily Christian town, etc.) The persecution of Christians in Israel has reached such a point that almost half of Christians under 30 want to emigrate from the country. Furthermore, Israel is the most pro-abortion and pro-sodomy country in the region with at least foreign "gay marriages" recognized (even those performed online) whereas no other middle eastern country recognizes them and Israel having the largest gay "pride" parades in the region.
